The settlers arrived in 1829 prior to any establishments or land allocations. The Government started rapidly selling the land to settlers for cheap, disregarding the rights of Indigenous people. Archaeological evidence demonstrates that the Noongar people have inhabited the Perth area for at least 45,000 years. Noongar country encompasses the southwest corner of Western Australia. The wetlands on the Swan Coastal Plain were particularly important to them, both spiritually (featuring in local mythology) and as a source of food.
